Medical and pharmaceutical translations require translators who not only know their source and target languages thoroughly and are knowledgeable and experienced in the fields of medicine or pharmaceuticals, but who also specialize in specific medical topics. A translator must be well versed in the terminology of the particular field of medicine that is being discussed whether they are translating medical documents, research reports, studies, or specific patient records and diagnoses. In these cases knowledge of appropriate medical terminology in the target language is imperative as there are frequently false cognates in this field of translation, meaning that a target language word that appears to be the equivalent to the source term is actually not the correct translation.
